漠然と人々を表す "you/they/we"

これは結構気付いてなかったかも。

  • You can't get driver's license until you're eighteen.（18歳になるまでは運転免許を取ることは出来ません）
  • They say she is getting married next month.（彼女は来月結婚するらしい）
  • We had little rain last month.（先月は雨が殆ど降らなかった）

再帰代名詞を使った重要表現

  • Help yourself to the salad.（サラダはご自由にお取りください）
  • Please make yourself at home.（楽にして下さい）
  • I couldn't make myself understood in English.（英語で自分の意思を伝えられなかった）
  • Take care of yourself.（お大事に）

"the others" と "others"

"the others" は他のもの全て、"others" は他のいくつかを表す。
例えば、6人のうち "some" を除いた残りは "others"。6人のうち "three" を除いた残り3人は "the others"。

any

疑問文で使われると、何かが少しでもあるか尋ねる意味になる。

  • I need some paper clips. Do you have any ?（お持ちですか？）

否定文で用いられると、「少しも〜ない」という意味になる。

  • There isn't any possibility of his failing.（彼が失敗する可能性は少しも無い）

肯定文で用いられると、「どれも」という意味になる。

  • Any student in this class can answer the question.（どの生徒もその質問に答えることが出来る）
