第十章: 比較
この辺りになってくると、段々知識量の問題になってくるなぁ。熟語集でも眺めれば解決出来そうなので、手抜きになってきます。ところどころメモ。余り真剣に読み込んだりはしていません。
比較の方法
比較の軸となるものを中心に、2つの文を"接続"する。
同程度のものを比較する場合は "as 原級 as" を使用する。
- Betty is attractive as Ann.
は以下の2つの文を、attractiveという語を軸に接続している。
- Betty is attractive.
- Ann is attractive.
asは軸となる語の直前に配置する。
これが比較級になると、"比較級 than"で接続するようになる。
- She is stronger than Scott.
「〜と同じくらい・・・の」
"as 形容詞 名詞 as ~" で表す。
- I have as many books as you.
この場合、形容詞と名詞を切り離すことは出来ない。従って "I have books as many as you." は間違い。 "as many books as" となる。
倍数を表す
「〜のX倍だ」を表すとき、"as ~ as" の前に倍数を置く。"twice as large as" など。
「できるだけ・・・」
"as ... as possible" もしくは "as ... as 主語 can" を使用する。
- The doctor came as quickly as he could.
「〜ほど・・・でない」
lessを使用して表す。
- The car is less expensive than that one.
「抜群に・・・だ」
"by far" や "much" を使用する。
- She is by far the best singer in this country.
「もっとも・・・でない」
"the least" を使用する。
- This is the least expensive computer in this store.
「相変わらず」
"as ... as ever" は「相変わらず」を表す。
- She looks as cheerful as ever.
「殆ど同じ」
"as good as ..." は「殆ど同じ」を表す。
- The work is as good as finished. （その仕事は殆ど終わったも同然だ）
「ますます〜」
"all the 比較級" を用いる。
- I like her all ther better for kindness. (彼女が親切なので、私はますます彼女が好きだ）
比較級を用いた表現
- more or less: 多かれ少なかれ
- sooner or later: 遅かれ早かれ
"no more than ~ " / "no less than ~"
「〜と同じようにそうではない」という否定の語。
- Sleeping too much is no more healthy than eating too much.
"no more than 数詞" / "not more than 数詞"
「ほんの〜しか」という風に、数量が少ないことを強調するのに使う。
- He paid me no more than 3000 yen for this work.
一方で「〜ほど多く」という風に、数量が多いことを強調するときは "no less than 数詞" / "not less than 数詞" を用いる。
- She paid me no less than 30000 yen for this work.
